The following is a list of modifications to the motorcycles that were done prior to leaving on our trip. R80G/S - '81 R80G/S (21k miles) - added Acerbis 40 liter (10.5 gallon) gas tank - added Acerbis hand guards + hand guard extenders - added an Acerbis small shroud faring (actually came with used bike) - added electric heated hand grips - installed accessory outlet. Had to drill a hole in the side cover for this. - installed Acerbis high front fender with extender, and aluminum brace - installed BMW front fork brace - replaced stock front springs with Progressive springs - replaced fork oil with 10W stiffening the suspension - replaced stock rear shock with an Ohlin type 3b - had to upgrade rear shock spring to a stiffer one - replaced ignition wires with new NGK wires - installed engine/oil pan bash plate - made and installed an aluminum exhaust/center stand bash plate - made and installed a stainless steel GPS mount for the front handlebars - tapped the electrical system for GPS power with in line 1/4 amp fuse - replaced clutch with new style. Previously had an '81 stock clutch plate which had a reputation of collapsing at inopportune moments. old clutch plate had lots of life left. - relubricated the transmission input splines - cleaned and repacked front wheel bearings - installed new rear brake shoes - installed front and rear Avon Gripster tires, Continental and Metzler tubes - installed new battery - rewired ignition switch so engine will run while in park position. This allows me to turn off the headlight. - mounted fog light on engine crash bars - mounted a bicycle water bottle holder on the handle bars - installed Al Jesse Aluminum panniers - these panniers required a stock exhaust system, so I had to swap the Sito exhaust that this came with for the stock exhaust on the R100GS - installed a custom made lockable aluminum top box with many lash points - applied numerous inconspicuity neon reflective stickers to the back of the panniers and top box. - replaced uncomfortable orange solo seat with a Corbin dual seat - replaced stock air filter with a cleanable UNI oil foam air filter - installed Emgo glass housing cleanable/renewable in line gas filters - mounted a fog light to engine crash guards - installed Fiam extra loud horn. - cut and mounted an extra large aluminum foot for the kickstand - installed a throttle lock screw (cruise control) - installed a mesh bag under the top box for carrying a spare quart of oil - routine maintenance: replace oils, oil filter, brake fluid, retorqued heads, and reset valve clearance Things I wanted to do to the R80G/S, but didn't get around to it - replace front forks with heavier duty ones - fashion a wire mesh rock guard for headlight - install high output voltage regulator. Currently carrying this with, and will install if need arises. - reinforce/brace the existing kickstand foot. - install a second stock upper triple clamp plate. - reinforce strength of the rear sub-frame - install a voltmeter R100GS - stock '92 R100GS (13k miles) - added 32 liter (8.45 gallon) steel gas tank (R80PD type). the stock one was 6 gallons. I had to modify the solo seat and trim the faring for this to fit. - added heated hand grips - added front hand protectors - changed dual seat to a solo seat with rack - changed low front fender to a high acerbis front fender with extended mud guard option. Also installed aluminum brace. - installed a cast aluminum CC products front fork brace - installed an engine/oil pan bash plate - installed exhaust/center stand bash plate - installed extra loud dual Fiam horns - installed a LED voltmeter - swapped the oil dipstick for a Luftmeister engine thermometer dipstick - installed Euroswitch for turning off headlight and parking light - swapped the small stock wind screen for a Parabellum wind screen - replaced stock rear shock with an Ohlin type 2 - had to upgrade rear shock spring to a stiffer one - replaced fork oil with 10W oil making them slightly more stiff - added a crash bar protector - installed a Bernd Tesch luggage rack system, and two 50 liter aluminum locking panniers - installed two jerry can gas holders to panniers for an additional 5 gallons of gas. However, since bike was already very back heavy, these were left at home the day before we embarked. - custom made a locking aluminum top box with numerous lash points, and an external holder for a 5x14" D lock. - installed Avon Gripster front and rear tires - replaced tire valve caps with valve core removing caps. - applied numerous inconspicuity reflective stickers of various neon colors on the back - added additional grounding wires to the rubber mounted diode board. - swapped stock ignition wires for NGK ignition wires - installed emgo glass housing cleanable/renewable fuel filters - replaced stock air filter with a cleanable UNI oil foam air filter - removed fuel and vapor solenoids. This reduces power consumption, and occasional hard warm starts. - mounted fog light on engine crash bars - relubricated the transmission input splines - The R80G/S needed a stock muffler for the Jesse panniers, so I swapped the stock one on the R100GS for the Sito muffler on that was on the R80G/S - installed new battery - has new (actually 2k old) stock rotor. I'm carrying a Motorad Elektric in case this fails - cut and mounted an extra large aluminum foot for the kickstand - installed a throttle lock screw (cruise control) - installed a mesh bag carrier between bike and right pannier for carrying a quart of oil. - routine maintenance: replace oils, oil filter, brake fluid, retorqued heads, and reset valve clearance ----- Dave Thompson thompson@pdnt.com www - http://sdg.ncsa.uiuc.edu/~mag/Thompson Net-Tamer V 1.09 Palm Top - Registered
