Postcards from Dave and Sharon

Mexico, 7 September 1997

Written 7 September, mailed 23 October (those slackers!), arrived about the middle of November. I forgot to note the arrival date, but it did pick up a US postmark in Fort Lauderdale, FL on 15 November.

Hello & don't let the postcard fool you, we are NOT in Mexico! We are in Antigua, Guatemala, but finally we are writing some postcards. Tom - maybe you can scan this - we weren't allowed to take pictures in the village! Planning to hike up a volcano one of these days. We want to see LAVA. Not much else happening this week - will head to Lake Atitlan soon & then into Honduras or El Salvador.

Sharon

P.S. This was mailed from Panama 10/23! :)

Colombia, 25 November 1997

Hi from Colombia - we're checking out the pre-Colombian stone statues in San Agustin, & soon we'll be in Ecuador. The scenery keeps getting more impressive and beautiful. And now a few words from my husband...

Hey, check out the hip chicks! They always dress like this however almost always have a big honkin gold ring in their nose. For Thanksgiving we hope to be in Ecuador eating fried chicken and drinking weak beer. Talk to you more by e-mail.

Ecuador, 30 November 1997

Written 30 November, postmarked 8 December. The postage is not a sticker, but looks to have been stamped on with a device such as a postage meter. Arrived while we were gone for Christmas vacation, sometime between 20 and 30 December.

Happy Holidays!

Yuck! Would you want to eat these carrots? Who knows where their feet have been! We're in Ecuador now (arrived yesterday) and are enjoying the local culture and following the "gringo trail" -- which is a great place to get info from other travellers. Food has improved from Colombia.

I'm still testing the toilets, and guess what? It spins in both directions! We really like Ecuador, not because of the toilets, but because of the beautiful mountains, lakes, cool temperature, and indigenous population that all dress with cool bowler hats and ponchos. Hope you have a safe trip home this Christmas.

Another greeting from Ecuador! Just in case you did not receive our e-mail from Quito, we wanted you to know where we are and that we finally saw our web page -- it looks great! Thanks for your work! Right now we are in Banos, a small village about 3 hours south of Quito that is known for its hot springs. It is really beautiful, nestled in the mountains.

Ecuador, 24 January 1998

Written 24 January by Sharon, postmarked 27 January, arrived 5 February. Although the postcard itself is from Ecuador, they wrote and sent it with a couple others (the next two here) from Peru about the end of January.

Hello

Just a short note this time... this was a cool market in Cuenca, Ecuador. The market was set up on a square & our hotel was on one side of the square. We had to ride the motorcycles through the crowded market to park inside the hotel. Met another motorcyclist here. Afterwards, we went south to Vilcabamba for Christmas.

How would you like to dine with these guys? Maybe they'd accept you if you wore a funny hat -- easy to buy the hats here & they look warm. Maybe a new fashion statement for the ski slopes? We're in Cusco, Peru -- just returned here on the night train after a visit to Machu Picchu -- Inca ruins built of stone. It was a scenic adventure. We marveled over which was most impressive -- the stone city or its beautiful location. We hiked to Intipuntu (Sun Temple) over a section of the Inca Trail. Many people take a 4 day hike & hire porters to carry their backpacks and they complete a 33km hike. Onward to Chile!

Hey guys, these postcards looked so good on the web, we decided we would have to send you a bunch.

We just got back to Cuzco after heading off to Machu Picchu, the former Inca capital. Machi Picchu is on top of a mountain surrounded by mountains with vertical cliff faces. Incredible scenery and well worth the 8 day detour to get to. Next week we plan to be in Bolivia and then Chile. Hopefully we'll be back online. We're starving for e-mail. Take care,

Easter Island??

Undated, written by Sharon, postmarked 13 March from Ushuaia, Argentina, arrived during the week of 21-28 March. Sharon and Dave know well that it's been a longtime dream of mine and LG's to go to Easter Island. They had never mentioned Easter Island in any of their travel plans, but surely they would pass through Santiago, from where you can get to Easter Island. Oh no!!

But wait: As I write this, they've sent journals that cover their trip well past Santiago (which they bypassed). And it's a little suspicious that the card is postmarked from Ushuaia. We think they just sent us this postcard to mess with our heads. So right now I'm awaiting email confirmation from them on whether they are Big Stinkers or not...

Hi.....

Need we say more???!

Hey guys,

We made it to the end of the world, the southernmost city Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego. The road ends here. Even though it's summer, it's cold. But it's beautiful.

Take care

Argentina, 3 April 1998

Written 3 April by Dave, postmarked 7 April, arrived about 21 April (I forget when exactly).

4/3/98

Check it out! This is only about a third of Iguazú Falls pictured here. They put Niagara to shame. We took a boat ride along the bottom, and got thoroughly drenched. The next day, we hiked along both the Brasilian and Argentinian trails that follow the edges. Way cool!

Take care

Dave

Brazil, April 1998

We're checking out the largest falls in the Americas. More later...
